Synopsis
The successful implementation of a laptop program has more to do with teaching methodology than the actual technology itself. This is the view reached since the school began exploring the classroom use of laptop computers in 1992.
The classroom use of laptop computers began in 1995 when Frankston High School implemented the first Laptop Program in a government school. The school participated in a major research project sponsored by Toshiba, Computelec and the Directorate of School Education. The research concluded that there were many benefits to teaching and learning as well as a new set of challenges for teachers to grapple with in the laptop classroom.
As a result of extensive planning and consultation with the school community, there are now approximately 600 students who have purchased a laptop computer. Students are organised into laptop classes, in 2004 there are six year 7, five year 8, three year 9 and three year 10 classes where every student has a laptop computer. In addition approximately fifty students in the Senior school bring a laptop computer to school for every-day use.
In implementing the laptop program the school has adopted the belief that computers on their own do not enhance learning, but the use of computers in the classroom leads to positive changes in teaching methods that enhance student learning. Since 1995 teaching methodology has changed significantly at Frankston High School as a result of the laptop program, access to the internet and the increase in computer technology across the school.
Embarking on a laptop program has required the school to rethink the learning environment. The school has a number of designated laptop classrooms. These are equipped with data projectors, wireless network access and curtains / blinds where appropriate to block out unwanted light. The school will continue to develop classrooms with roof mounted data projectors and wireless network access in 2005.
At the beginning of 2001 the school installed a wireless network which allowed all students to access the Internet, e-mail and Intranet from any classroom in the school. This enables teachers to further design and implement innovative and interactive curriculum into the classroom. In addition to this, all online curriculum is available to students and staff from home via our extensive Intranet. This progressive curriculum offers students at Frankston High School a cutting edge education which we believe prepares our students for the world beyond school.
Frankston
High School acknowledges that technology should be an integral part of every
student's education, and seeks to offer progressive professional development
for its teachers to ensure that the best teaching and learning occurs in the
classroom. The laptop program prepares our students to be lifelong learners
and to leave the school with the essential skills required in the rapidly changing
work places.
