Students who undertake a VET subject may apply to undertake the study – Structured Workplace Learning Recognition. This program connects students through their VET subject to the workplace. It provides authentic, real life experiences where students undertake 10 – 20 days of work placement throughout the year.

VCE VOCATIONAL MAJOR

The VCE-Vocational Major program offered by Frankston High School has been designed to both meet the eligibility criteria as set by the VCAA and meets the specific vocational and applied learning needs of our extraordinary student cohort.

As part of the VCE Vocational Major program, students are required to undertake Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) each year at Frankston High School.

Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) involves a student finding an industry placement aligned with their VET program, which can give them experience and an understanding of work and career opportunities within that

industry. The student generally observes various aspects of the work within the industry and is given relevant tasks to complete under supervision.

SWL provides an opportunity for students to apply what they have learnt in their VET program to the real- world work context and develop their employability skills.

Students select a VET certificate which they are expected to continue to its completion at the end of Year 12. To achieve their VCE Vocational Major they must complete 180 hours of VET at Cert II level or above.

Students cannot change VET subjects. It is important to recognise that VET is a nationally recognised qualification and that in some instances, only a partial completion of a certificate is possible at the end of two years. In these instances, students are still eligible for their VCE Vocational Major certificate.

As with any subject, VET offerings are also dependent upon timetabling and availability. The selection of a VET certificate does not automatically guarantee placement in that program. Our VET providers determine availability and placements. Our VET Coordinator will work closely with students if they need to change their VET subject selection. These decisions are made by our VET providers.

FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES

The curriculum encourages students to extend themselves and pursue their interests by accelerating into subjects in the next year level.

  • Approximately 50% of our Year 10 students select to accelerate into Unit 1 and 2 VCE by undertaking a study in an area of interest.
  • Similarly 50% of students accelerate into a Unit 3 and 4 VCE study in Year 11.
  • Selected students have the opportunity to undertake a University Enhancement Study in Year 12.

We have a close partnership with Monash University and through our Schools Access Monash Program students embrace the wide range of aspirational opportunities and activities on tertiary education and career pathways.

Students have access to a wide array of prestigious scholarships and leadership programs including the Kwong Lee Dow Scholarship to the University of Melbourne and the Australian Defence Force Long Tan Leadership Awards.

We are very proud of our outstanding VCE results and the large number of students who enter their preferred tertiary education pathway. The school offers extensive careers counselling and support services to maximise the learning opportunities for all students. High expectations amongst staff and students and a collaborative work ethic among staff, students and their families ensures a strong focus on success in both the senior years and tertiary study.

We support all students to make informed choices based on their abilities, interests and career aspirations for the future. Our focus is to ensure that every student is given every opportunity to achieve their very best. View our Careers Website here.
